I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. We spent some very needed family time and enjoyed some great fireworks!

As promised, I finally photographed my FIRST EVER PIPED COOKIES!!! To tell you the truth, I was really nervous! Silly, huh?! They are only cookies! I think it was more about getting it right. I always have really high expectations of myself. I was actually pleasantly surprised! Although the designs are very elementary, I found that I really enjoyed using the piping bag. It is more forgiving than I thought. The problem is that I'm not so great with straight lines :) Well, the lines must have gone straight on their own!

I didn't love making the Royal Icing. I bought and studied an really informative book called Cookie Craft. There is so much wonderful information that I didn't want to let the two authors, Valerie Peterson and Janice Fryer, down! I know that I have to practice more, but I feel like I am not getting the icing quite the right consistency. It takes awhile to mix and bag all of the different colors. And you need both flooding icing and piping icing. I had the most difficulty getting the piping and flooding colors to match. They looked the same to me until I used them and then saw the quite a difference. The most frustrating thing, though, is that the left over icing is really not usable. It begins to separate. I HATE to waste things, so it goes against my grain. I'm sure that I'll learn to deal with it!

I know that I promised to record my first ever icing decorated cookie. The truth is that it takes awhile to finish them! I cut them out yesterday and put them aside for a decorating session today. I have been working on the icing today and there is a lot of drying time in between layers. I have no pictures as of yet.

I was really afraid to try my hand at the piping bag. While I am very adept at most things such as this, I do not have the steadiest of hands. I was really thinking that I would not be able to control the icing and draw straight lines. Well, I surprised myself and actually feel very comfortable piping! It feels so "professional"!

Surprising to me, the part that I am uncomfortable with is the icing. I realize that this is only the first attempt, but I thought that the flooding icing and piping icings I made matched colors very closely. When I used them though, they were very different shades. Being the perfectionist that I am, this bothered me. I wish I had someone to help me!

The day before, I baked little versions of my specialty cookies. I am really enjoying baking. It is so gratifying to me and that is such a good feeling. I'm hoping to bring these "tastes" to try to sell. I will be going to caterers and business that give gifts, such as lawyers and the like. Wish me luck!

Creative Baking

I've been busy researching. I am working on finding my style with this baking adventure that I am taking. All of my free time has been spent scouring the internet, hopping from blog to blog, taking in all of the styles of baking that are out there. I am in creativity overload! I simply can't believe how many talented people there are in the world.

I have gained so much inspiration in the past few days. It has been both enlightening and even a little overwhelming. I have always baked traditional cookies. This is no surprise. I am a traditional person. I make a mean chocolate chip cookie, and the most delicious giant ginger cookie. My peanut butter cookies with a Kiss in the center are to die for, so I am told. I also bake Rugelach that disappear before they are out of the oven ;)

Lately, I have been considering adding some different styles of cookies to my repertoire. I am very interested in learning the art of decorated sugar cookies. I am mesmerized by the beautiful colors, patterns and elegant styles that can be achieved. I think my husband is going to kill me though! If I try one more new craft...! These are the demons that us creative artistic people have to contend with ;) Our minds are always working.

Tomorrow, I will attempt my first batch of piped icing cutout cookies and I'm going to post a picture of the results no matter how it looks! This has the potential of being a very funny post, so I'd be sure to check back! I know it will be an awkward event. I've never used a piping bag before, but I am confident that I will master the icing. Let's see how long it will take. I have some beautiful ideas in my head. I can't wait until I am able to implement them.

2000 Cookies DONE!!!

If I can complete this order, I can take on anything! I never realized just how many cookies 2000 actually is! And better yet, where to put that many of anything! I am very lucky to have a fairly decent sized kitchen and yet, without a commercial baking setup, this order was quite a challenge! I really am proud of myself and it feels good.

Backing up... I took an order for 1000 bags of two cookies each. These cookies were to be given to each baseball player in our local baseball league. I had one week to plan, bake and package them all. My wonderful husband created the bag toppers and readied them for me to use. I baked more than I ever thought I could bake. I packaged and stapled more than I ever thought that I could staple! But I did it and I am done! I think that they look great and I got great feedback as well.

Most importantly, I am sure, now, that this is something that I want to go forward with. I love to bake and I never, not for one moment, got tired of the challenge. As a matter of fact, I feel disappointed that it is over. I am sad that I have no orders to fill! It felt wonderful to have a purpose and my children were so sweet and aware of my feelings of accomplishment. Jacob, my youngest, kept coming in to give me shoulder rubs and he even whispered how proud he was of me :) Then he would check for rejects!

I have opened an Etsy shop at www.batches.etsy.com for my cookies and would love it if you would stop by and make me a favorite. Keep in mind that I just opened it and will be doing much more work to make it more attractive and to add many more choices. I have a lot of photographing in the future days and weeks ahead and I will be getting a new logo designed when I can come up with an official name. (I've lost hours and hours of sleep trying to figure out THE name!) I just can't seem to find something that I love and that hasn't been taken. I will and then everything else will follow. Meanwhile, you can request any cookies you like. I will be happy to accommodate your order. I'll just post a custom order for you.

Some Progress and an Interview!

No pictures, just some quick comments. I am proud to say that I was featured on Apples For Poppy Anne, a wonderful blog. Erin interviewed me and I encourage you to go read a little bit about me as designer! It is fun! Thanks Erin, for your support!

I am also excited to say that I just got my first cookie order. I am presently very busy baking 2000 cookies for our local baseball league. I am putting together a "thank you" for each of the players. I am exhausted... I baked 18 batches of cookies today! It isn't the actual baking that is a problem. When you aren't set up with a commercial kitchen, where do you put 2000 cookies?!!! I'm working it out, though, and it feels great to accomplish this feat. I'll show some pictures as I get closer to packaging them.

Meanwhile, I have also entered some more of my new wrap bracelets in my Etsy shop. Please do take a look. Oh, I have a picture!

Operation Nice

Ok. How did I never come across the amazing blog Operation Nice? I am practically obsessed with being kind. My husband and I pride ourselves in our never ending quest to teach our children this very important quality. The first thing that people always tell me is how wonderfully kind my boys are.

In fact, here is my desktop page that I created using my favorite saying and favorite picture from a recent vacation in Hawaii.

I think that kindness (and being nice) is something that is done more for yourself than for the receiver of your good intentions. It makes me feel better about myself when I do an act of kindness, and then my interactions with others is always more genuine and enjoyable.

Just yesterday, my husband and I were getting bagels and the young women ahead of us was $1.20 short for her order. Ira gladly handed the girl the money and said to enjoy her lunch. It seems like the obvious thing to do, but acts like these seem to be so few and far between these days...at least where I live they are. I hope that people in other places are more supportive than here.

I have a very large chip on my shoulder about how people act where I live. My husband and I often feel so out of place where we live. The fast pace and "I got mine" mentality is driving us crazy. It really does bother us to the core. My theory is that it is so over populated here, that everyone is in eachother's personal space. People have become so worried about taking care of their own needs that they forget to be courteous.

We were in a car accident a year ago. Someone cut us off at a busy intersection and tried to cross in front of us to cross over two lanes and turn. Sorry we were in his way. It was rush hour. We got smashed on the side and couldn't drive out of everyone's way. Instead of anyone stopping to see if we were ok, everyone began to drive around us and form a new lane. There we were, in shock, and there were two lanes of traffic continuing on both sides of us like nothing happened. It was gut wrenching to me. All I could think about was that I had just been hit from behind a week ago and an old man was very hurt in the car behind us. I sat with him, held his hand, and tried to help him deal with his pain until the ambulance arrived 20 minutes later. I would not leave his side until I had to get out of the way for the help.

This way of living has taken a toll on my nerves. As soon as Jacob is done with school in three years, we are hoping to move to a place where there is a little more of what we, as a family need. Any suggestions? Feel free to suggest!

So I will be visiting Operation Nice for my "nice fix" regularly! I could really use it.

Feeling Better Today

I am feeling a bit better today. I am more open to some of the changes that I know I need to make. It is sometimes so scary to face change – at least it is for me. I was driving Jacob home from school today and I stopped to pick up an application to sub, or possibly teach, next year. He looked at me and said in a puzzled voice, "Why didn't you become a Home Ec. teacher, Mom? You do everything that you need to do to teach that. You cook and you sew and you knit and you know everything about that stuff." He's right. I do.

It has been 15 years since I worked outside the home. I have a Teaching Degree and a Master's Degree, but have only taught for two years when I was first out of college. That was 20 years ago. Everyone asks me why I don't teach. The answer is complicated.

Basically, I am a people pleaser. Growing up, I did what my parents thought I should do. I tried, always, to make them happy and proud. And they were very happy and very proud. The problem was that I never realized that I was not aware of what actually made me happy and proud. My parents never thought about what made me happy. They wanted my brother and I to be responsible, reliable adults and so they wanted us to go to college and get good jobs. I don't blame them, but this has greatly impacted who I am.

It wasn't until I started working, that I realized how out of place I continuously felt. I thought that it was my fault for being uncomfortable. No matter what I was doing, whether it was teaching or working in an office, I just felt miserable and uncomfortable inside. All I could think of was my urges to get out of there and create. I couldn't concentrate on anything but the creative projects I would do when I got home. Long story short, this eventually turned into an anxiety problem because I never felt whole inside.

I found myself on a quest to understand myself and over time, I began to realize that not everyone has to work in an office to be successful. There are choices to make and I began to realize that my need to create was not a problem, or character flaw. It was a personality trait. I looked back at my earliest memories and realized that everything that has stayed with me was always of me creating! I can remember making tissue paper flowers – the ones where you make a fan with the tissue and wrap the center with a pipe cleaner. Then you gently pull each layer apart. I even sprayed them with mom's perfume! We cut paper doll chains, too. When I was outside during recess, I made chains from clover flowers. I peeled the bark from sticks and braided every ponytail I could find. I even French braided all of my friends' hair before Prom. My hands had to create. The lightbulb went off! I need to create. I don't just do it because it is fun. It is who I am… what I was supposed to do.

My next quest, was to find a way to make a living doing what I like.

Deep Thought

My boys are all at a Mets game...Go Mets!!

So, I have a few hours of quiet. My mind is certainly not quiet lately. I'm afraid that this post might be long and a little dreary. I'm in need of a girlfriend and there is no one available...

I'll start on a positive note. I've photographed my bracelets and I am pleased with how they turned out. I have gotten my photo taking down pat and it is so much more gratifying. I know they are not perfect, but knowing what I am doing makes the process so much easier.
Having Picnik is also a great tool. I highly recommend it.

My next step with my pictures is to send them out to stores and try to do some power marketing. That sounds so ambitious, but for me, it is a stretch. It is very difficult for me to know how to market. It all seems so straight forward, but acting on it is a different story. All of this leads me to what is eating away at my heart.

It's funny; I have found so much comfort in reading Applesforpoppyanne. Erin has really struck a chord with me and I can't get enough of her writing. It is so comforting to me to see that there really are people in the world who are like me. Yet it is such a tease, because they are only in blogland. I have always been different from everyone around me. I think I am normal. I am normal. I just have old fashioned morals and ideas. I have passion about old fashioned things. I have always felt more comfortable with people who are older than I.

I love to knit and do craft. I cook and bake with passion. I take pride in a clean house and love order. I only like things with soul and take great joy in searching for special things from the past. I only like things with a story to them.

The people in my life don't connect with, or appreciate, anything that I do. I read Erin's passage today and just cried. I mourn for the one person who came into my life who shared all of these emotions with me. My husband's grandmother came into my life when I was 19. She stayed in my life until 2 years ago, when she unexpectedly passed. I had 24 special years with her. I still haven't really mourned. She was the only person, except my husband, who understood me and was everything I need in a person. She was soft, yet wild, and loving to the core. She was a caretaker and aware of everything good in the world. I could talk to her about anything. And she taught me to knit. When she passed, I took everything that was meaningful to me. I have her dear father's coat shears. She would tell me about her abundant coat collection during the Depression, all hand sewn by him. I have the pictures to prove it. I took her original knitting needles and a pair of tiny scissors that she used in her everyday. When she was alive, I cooked all of her recipes with her. I needed to be able to carry on the traditions of her Jewish cooking. It means so much to me to make her recipes today. No one else in the family cared to even pay attention. Sometimes, I'll feel like treating everyone to their favorite "momma" dishes and they just devour it and leave the table. Not so much as a thank you.

This is what is bothering me so much in my life right now. My boys are grown and I am searching so hard to find my niche again. It isn't working yet. I have no support or family, except for my mom, that is there for me. I love my boys to the end of the earth, but they look at me like I am from Mars! I am really lost, huh?

To top that off, my husband has been out of work for a very long time and I need to go back to work. I haven't worked outside of the home for 15 years. The work I did for 9 years before that lead me to an anxiety problem. My head is spinning and I don't know where to begin. I know that getting a job is first on the list, but in this economy, where do I look? Being happy at my work is overly important to me and that is a big problem. I need to address that tomorrow. This is getting too long and too revealing.

My Wrap Bracelets Are Here!

I know that I am seriously considering selling my cookies. I also know that I am working on trying to commit to a decision, but jewelry is in my blood as well. What can I say? I have been working on these leather wrap bracelets and cuffs and I absolutely LOVE them! I am addicted to weaving them on my bead loom and I can't stop! I find that I am using beads that I thought I would never use. I even have my grandma's seed beads out and am able to put them to special use. The green bracelet is made using her stash and I adore wearing it. It just feels special. I am willing to share, too!

The bracelets that wrap give the illusion of wearing multiple bracelets... a look that is so popular. The leather is soft and supple and the thread that I use is nylon. It is weather resistant and very long wearing. I've worn one of mine for over a year and hardly took it off. Believe me when I say that these bracelets become like your favorite pair of jeans!

I have so many different versions in all different configurations, so just ask me to make yours in the stone and style that you just have to have. You want to treat yourself to one at my Etsy shop. I'll have them up today and tomorrow.

All Directions Are OK

On my journey to be honest with myself and the world, I have already come across some incredibly inspiring blogs. I have also found it incredibly fulfilling to read the writings of these women and to learn from their wisdom.

I have always felt like a lost soul. I think waaaayyyyyy too much about everything and I know no one who is like I am. For this reason, I have always thought that this quality was a negative one. I don't dislike this about myself, I just wish I could "lighten up" a bit sometimes. I know how to laugh. Don't get me wrong. I just need others to make me laugh. Well, I am beginning to see that I am not alone. There are other women who do think like I do. It has been terribly enlightening and actually, very comforting.

I was reading a quote from Martha Beck at a wonderful blog, Songs Of Light. This blog is a must read. Please do stop by. Anyway, this quote struck a chord with me and my never ending quest to figure out my life. Being almost 45, I think it is about time to get some direction and make some decisions. I've always beat myself up at not being thoroughly successful at any one thing. Ms. Beck's words give me the courage to know that my ever changing path is just my journey. I am ever learning. Now is the time to put the wisdom to work.

Have A Cookie

Here I was all ready to get back to blogging and life got in the way... again! My personal work did not take a back seat though. And I feel really good about that. I spent the last week packing, moving, and unpacking my MIL in her new apartment. It is a harrowing job, and since she is a victim of the economic times... a very emotional one. But it is nearly complete and she can finally settle in and hopefully find some peace. My family has been in the mortgage business for 35 years and it has wreaked havoc on us all; my husband included. Believe me when I say it is a scary time.

Working is all that is on my mind. One of my problems is that I firmly believe in loving what you do. Oprah drilled that in my head and my heart over the past 10 years. She just forgot to tell me How to go about doing that successfully. I guess that that is not her job. It is mine to accomplish and that is where the problem lies. I am an artist, not a business woman by any stretch of the imagination. I have big dreams, too many for that fact, and don't have a clue as to how to bring them to life. Maybe I don't give myself enough credit. I have tried. Believe me when I say that. But I don't know how to create long term plans. It is a frustrating thing.

I get frustrated (OK...jealous) when I see two women starting a company. That is my dream... to find the other half of what I do. I realize that I am actually very lucky. I have so many ideas and I have 3 or 4 different skills that could be brought to fruition, but I have learned from experience that it takes more than an idea and a skill. It takes marketing and sales to be successful. The skills actually come very far down the list.

Presently, and for the past 5 years, I have been working at selling my jewelry. I have found mild success, but nothing I feel good about. I want to know what it feels like to be proud of myself. I have feel proud of what I make and what I have taught myself, but having so much jewelry to myself just feels like a burdened reminder of my half success. I have tried to find niches, but nothing has ever taken off.

In the past few days, I have begun thinking about another venue. Shhh... don't tell anyone. They'll kill me if I mention ANOTHER idea ;) I bake cookies. In fact, I bake cookies very well. I used to sell my cookies until I wanted to sell my jewelry. I was known to some as "the cookie lady". For that reason, I am considering doing this again. It is comforting to know that there is actually a demand for that product and I feel like I have learned from my previous experiences to move forward.

Now for the big hurdle...COMMITMENT. I am always paralyzed with fear when it comes to spending money. I have none to work with as it is. I feel nervous just writing this because I know that I have some heavy duty decisions to make. My dream would be to open a cookie cafe. I would love to be a central part of my community... a meeting place. I would love for Girl Scouts to get a baking badge at my shop. I would love to include my other LOVES in the mix. Knitting nights, jewelry how-to classes, and baseball board meetings would all be a daily part of my plan. People want to have a cozy place to just "be" and I want them to enjoy a cold glass of milk and some homebaked cookies.

Welcome To My Reality.

As you can see, once again I faded away! I have actually been spending time creating (something we all know that I have no problem reverting to). I have been working on a new idea for a jewelry line and it has consumed my thoughts. This happens so often. I just wish I could get consumed with thoughts of how to market my lines ;)

Seriously, it has become a problem for me. I have so much wonderful jewelry in my studio. It is like a store, set up with pretty racks full of hand made goodness. There is no one to wear my pieces... just a dream of success. I'm actually not giving myself enough credit. I do sell a bit here and there, but certainly not enough to consider myself "working".

Yesterday, I came across a blog called Apples For Poppy Anne. You must visit this blog. The writer, Erin, is so incredibly inspiring and her writing is magical. It is a blessing to me, personally, to have found her wisdom at a time when I am needing it so much. I have tried to keep a smile on my face for so long now, but I am really in need of facing some much overdue reality. In order for me to handle these personal issues, I am going to have to dig deep. I am tired of feeling like a victim and I need to search for my way to take control of my journey.

So if you are able to bear with me, and with a huge "thank you" to Erin for giving me the courage to do the soul searching "out loud", I invite you to pop in to my "reality blog" as I will call it! Most blogs are all happy happy. Some are informational and some are selly selly. Mine is going to be journey journey. I need to be me and me is in need of some digging down deep. I could use a few friends along the way, but if this journey is too boring to be a part of, then so be it. This is my first fear faced.

We all want to belong. I'm sure it is innate. We all feel the need to please other people, whether it is our parents or our employers, our friends, spouses, or ourselves. I have always been a people pleaser. I have gauged my success on other peoples' reactions to what I am doing. It is difficult for me to feel successful without the approval of others. Yes, I am 44 years old and have raised 2 wonderful, confident boys. But the truth is, I struggle with this still. I always thought that as you grew older, you gained poise and confidence with each of your successes and experiences, but sometimes, I still feel like a child inside!

I have always needed my decisions to be validated by others and the truth is, it has hurt my forward momentum. I have been hesitant to take chances, be it money or personal, and I am paying the price for that. If anything, I want you to learn from my mistakes and if this weakness is a part of your life, conquer it now!

One of my greatest gifts has also been my greatest downfall. I am blessed with being talented with my hands and creativity. I am a confident person when it comes to cooking and sewing, baking, designing, knitting, etc. So as a SAHM, when I decided to begin my own business, I had the ability to master the skills I would need to go in quite a few directions. I just had to pick one and expand upon it. At the time, I had a successful cookie business during the holidays. I had also been knitting for many many years and DREAMED of owning a boutique. Not enough people were knitting back then, so reluctantly, I put that dream on hold. I was sewing doll dresses and embroidering wonderful wedding accessories, all in an attempt to find the right fit.

Everything changed the night I attended a friend's jewelry party. She was hosting a party for another friend who sold an artist's hand made pieces. I was struck by the positive energy flowing. Everyone was loving the accessories and as I took notice, I began to realize that I, too, could create these pieces. And for much less than these designer prices! I got the "fire in my belly" feeling and found myself in Manhattan in the fashion district. I scoured the resources and began absorbing every technique I could lay my eyes on. I studied the magazines and spent endless hours at Borders. I am a perfectionist at heart and I didn't stop until I felt I mastered every technique I set my mind to. It took a year or so until I was able to really feel like I accomplished my beginning goals, but I had something to be proud of. I finally felt like I had direction.

I'm Ravelrized!

Is there such a thing? I spent the better part of today getting more familiar with Ravelry. I've "belonged" for a long time, but I only seem to use it as research tool. I want to be able to sell my patterns there, as they come about, and so it begins! The learning curve never seems to slow down! My brain hurts from trying to keep up with all of the new computer stuff! ie, I've never worked with PDF's before. I have to learn how to do that next. Hubby is not always available ;) Anyway, I am going to be teaching a knitting and a jewelry making class at my LYS! If all goes well, I will be doing more of what I love and it is so exciting to me to be building the momentum yet again!

My new jewelry line is growing and I even sold the last pair of earrings that I just listed! I've got tons of new vintage ideas, but I have to gather some more materials first. That is the fun part of creating, but the expensive part too, and $$$ is short. I'm trying to make good use of my resources!

Gotta Go With The Flow

Wow. When you are a designer, thoughts and ideas come in waves. The most important thing that I've learned is that you have to just let it flow. You can't put it off, because it'll be gone when you come back to it. Even if you make sketches, I find that the mood is just as important to the outcome of your work. It all comes together at once, if you are lucky! That's what I've been doing this week. The momentum was there and I went with it.

I've entered these pieces in my Etsy shop. Go take a look! I have a buy 2 get 1 free sale going on for Mother's Day. It is almost too late, but better late than never!

I have also been getting a momentum going with my knitting pattern. Thank you SOOOO much for your purchases. It means more than you know. I've always dreamed of writing patterns and I am getting a response which has built my confidence wonderfully :) I have so many more knitting ideas, but writing patterns takes time, because knitting takes time! And so please know that I am working hard to put it all together so that I present the projects to you in a well designed way.

My next pattern will be for laptop case! I can not wait to share it with you! It is really pretty and unique, too. Look for it on Etsy!

Sweet and Sour Meatballs For Dinner!

So I'm finally making some sales and there is a glitch with my shopping cart on Etsy! It always seems to be something! If you are trying to purchase my market bag, you can either send me a check (leave me an email and I will give you an address), or we can try again. Sometimes that works. I am waiting on a reply from Etsy so that I can resolve the issue.

I was trying to think of what to make for dinner when I remembered a recipe I wanted to try. I just so happened to have pineapple that needed to be eaten so it was a perfect match! It smells great, but I am waiting for Jake and Ira to come home and then we'll eat.

Here's the recipe:

Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Pineapple Chunks 20 oz. can
1/3 c water
3 T Vinegar
1 T Soy Sauce
1/2 c Brown Sugar
3 T cornstarch

Drain the pineapple, saving the liquid. Set the pineapple aside. Add enough water to the juice to make 1 cup of liquid. Add to skillet. Add additional 1/3 cup of water, vinegar,soy sauce, brown sugar, and cornstarch.

Stir continuously on medium heat, until the liquid thickens. Add pineapple and meatballs. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes. Serve with rice.

This was a hit!!!!!! At the last minute, I decided to add sugar peas. Not only were they delicious, but they added wonderful color to the dish! I highly recommend this recipe. It took no time at all and was a snap to make.

Well, even though I haven't been able to drum up any success through my Market Bag giveaway, I have still been able to make a bunch of sales through other venues :} It truly is hard to get a following with my blog! Does anyone have any suggestion? Am I doing something wrong? Please let me know. I can take it!

I DO feel like I have a little momentum building with my sales. I did a Designer Showcase this weekend at a shop that I consign with. The show itself was a bust, but I met another designer who is sweet as can be. I have really needed to become friendly with people who have similar interests as I do. Life hasn't dealt me too many and it is beginning to effect who I am. It seems that there are only boys and men in my life (that sounds like a GOOD thing!!!), but those of you who know what I mean will understand ;) I need to talk some girl talk!

Anyway, I made a few jewelry sales at the show and personally. I also sold 4 or 5 patterns. It is exciting to me that I am able to design an element, put it legibly to paper, and present it so that someone is interested! It is very satisfying to me. One of my customers shared with me that she is going to knit the bag to hold her holiday gifts that she is giving! It tickles me to be a part of such an intimate gift!

Success, One Pattern At a Time!

I took a chance and tried my hand at writing a knitting pattern! I have wanted to do this for awhile, but it would mean that I have more computer learning to do and it seems like I am always needing to learn more! Don't get me wrong. I Love to learn, but it always seems like there are roadblocks to sailing right along! I am sure you all have these same problems ;)

Anyway, I finally learned how to make PDF's and now I can go ahead with my plans! My Market Bag instructions are for sale at my Etsy shop and I have already received some sales! I am really thrilled to have found customers right away and it feels wonderful to know that I made a good choice in taking this chance.

My goal is to create some more fun knitting patterns and offer them for you all to enjoy. Some will be free, some will be given away as prizes and fund raisers, and some will be available for a small fee on Etsy. I hope that you will help me get the word out. I could use some blog love to gather some more knitters.

Don't Ever Judge A Book By It's Cover

Well, as far as today's moment of gratitude is concerned, it is by far my experience of seeing the video of Susan Boyle sing I Dream a Dream from Les Miserable.

This is a story of a 47 year old lady who, despite her difficult past and her lack of outward beauty (she has never even been kissed before) appears before a panel of judges and an audience of non-believers, hoping to fulfill her life long dream to sing professionally. She opens her mouth, begins to sing, and from the very first note, wins over every single heart in the audience. There isn't a dry eye present as everyone spontaneously rises to their feet to experience her amazing performance. This woman, with a voice of an angel, reminds everyone in the room that beauty is from the inside out.

I sobbed. What can I say? I tend to be that way when life so blatantly reminds us of the most important lessons in life. Susan has had a very tough life and her time to shine has finally come. I am so grateful for both her new found success and for the life lesson that she has presented to so many people around the world.

I am vowing to remember this moment when my problems get the better of me. If Susan can conquer so many obstacles as she travels through her lifes' journey, so too, can I.

I'm so excited to offer the knitting pattern that I have written for a reuseble Market Bag! At the same time, I am a little bit nervous! While I have been knitting for more than 25 years and have designed many items for myself, I have not ever shared written instructions for other people to use. BUT...I know that knitters are wonderful people and you will all go easy on this beginner pattern writer!!!! Of course, please contact me with any questions!

Momma's Mandel Bread Recipe

As promised, I am back with a follow-up on my recipe for Chocolate covered toffee matzah. Didn't it come out pretty? I actually broke the boards into bite sized pieces and arranged them on a plate. It is so easy to make and it tastes delicious! The recipe is from the company called Matzel Toff. The owner was on Martha yesterday. Yum!!!

The other recipe for Mandel Bread is an old family recipe from my husband's grandma. I treasure this recipe. It has been a staple for Passover and it tastes better than any I've had. It is made with love.

Momma's Mandel Bread

2c. sugar
1/2 lb. butter
6 eggs
2 3/4c. matzah cake meal
1/2tsp. salt
3/4c. potato starch
1 sm. bag of choc chips
1tsp. cinnamon/sugar mixture

In a medium bowl, combine dry ingredients with a whisk. In a mixer bowl, combine sugar, butter, and eggs, using paddle attachment. I mix on medium for about 4-5 minutes to incorporate air. Add dry ingredients slowly to the wet ingredients, on low, until just combined. Add chocolate chips.

On a Silpat that has been placed on a cookie sheet, (a plain cookie sheet is fine, too), form two loaves that are the same size and height. Sprinkle generously with sugar mixture and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.

***I prefer to under bake this rather than overbake because of the dry nature of this dessert***

Happy Passover

I have to make this quick! I've been baking all day and we are on our way to my family's for a Seder. I make Mandel bread for Passover...LOTS of Mandel bread! I never complain though because it is delicious! Think chocolate chip cookies. I have some pictures, but I think I will share them tomorrow along with the recipe. I also tried the chocolate covered toffee matzah that was made on Martha this morning. It looked like fun and I am always up for trying new things! I'll report back tomorrow with the details and some pix.

As for the happy thought for the day, I would definitely have to say that baking all day surrounded by my family was a great feeling. I knew that everyone was looking forward to what I was making, so they were eager to spend time with me!

We will miss Josh soooooo much tonight. This is the first time that he will be away for a holiday. I love you so much Bud. We'll be thinking of you.

Another New Day! I want to thank you for putting up with my mellow drama, but I feel really good about being myself on my blog and working on thinking positively. It really does feel freeing to just spend time putting the effort into being positive. "Whatever works." is my motto. And writing about it gives me a reason to concentrate on it.

I promised myself that I was going to come up with a happy thought each day. Today's thought for the day is SLEEPING WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN. That seems kind of random, but as I was cleaning, I was thinking about this ;)

I can't wait until it is that time of year. That is the most invigorating feeling to me and it doesn't hurt that my husband loves it, too! Both looking forward to something is double the pleasure!

Now to business...I have been working on a new, more affordable line of jewelry and it turns out to be really fun! I have been spending hours thinking of different designs and different ways to use all of the new components that I have been collecting. This style of jewelry is quite different from what I have been creating in the past. I am trying to incorporate my favorite techniques that I used with my silver jewelry. Wire work has always been important to my creating. I can spend hours wire wrapping beads into chain. I hope that my customers notice details such as this. I feel like it makes a big difference in the quality of my jewelry. Whether a piece is $15 or $50, I work with the same amount of love, pride, and consideration.

I will be introducing my new pieces in my blog, so stay tuned for the most up to date information. After the pieces are introduced here, they will be available through my Etsy shop. After the holidays, I will be starting a new schedule of events, one being a weekly giveaway, in celebration of my new line!

Every Day is a New Day.

They say that every day is a new day. I'm going with that. It has been awhile now, that I have been struggling personally. I'm sure that those of you who have stopped in now and again have noticed. I have kind of been all over the place for the past year. It isn't that I am not committed to blogging or my business. I am the most committed person that you will ever come across. The problem has been that I don't really know how I fit in to the scheme of things in my own life.

Don't get me wrong. I have the world's BEST husband and sons. I am in love for 27 years. And I can count on one hand how many problems my children have given me. My problem lies in figuring out where I fit in the big picture. I know where I want to be, but I don't know how to get there. My personality makes it difficult and sometimes uncomfortable for me and that is where "a new day" comes in to play.

I've been following blogs, and writing my own, for about a year. There is no doubt that there is a formula to what makes a blog more likely to be returned to. Having a sense of humor and a sense of excitement gets lots of followers. People want to tune in to fun and lightheartedness - someone who will be a friend to everyone. You want to feel as if the blogger is thinking of you.

The problem is, not everyone has that personality. Say, Lisa Stone for instance! I have been trying to find my blogging voice. At the same time, I have also been trying to find my selling voice, my Lisa voice, my thinking positive thoughts voice, and trying to be what I think will be a success voice. The problem is that I am not a lighthearted happy go lucky person. I think too much. I am very serious minded. And I am trying to figure out how to improve upon myself. I don't feel that any of these qualities are bad or wrong. They just are. So instead of avoiding my blog because I can't think of how to make it light and cheerful, you will get ME. Me isn't so bad! I have some great qualities, too! I am loyal and hard working, giving and loving. I can bake a mean cookie and cook a great meal. I can craft just about any item you may need and I knit beautifully. I love to be with people, but I am not a leader. I will be the first person you can rely on when you need someone. {This sounds like I am looking for a new home ;)}

I am going to use my blog to work on some personal topics and how they tie in with my business. My life is very much about my business. Now I just have to make my business happen. I hope you will stick by my side as I work on improving different qualities in my life. I am looking for some companionship, some words of advice, and most of all, some improvements on my behalf. I have always figured out my problems by talking about them. Sadly, I have no sisters, no daughters, and no female family to talk to. I have few friends, at the moment, whom I confide in. I realize that I have isolated myself too much. So for now, I will use my blog to help me solve my problems. I plan on getting back out there in the world socially. Don't worry. It's not like I am agorophobic, just isolated. Us artists tend to like solitary time. I am allowing for too much of a good thing.

I have been hearing the saying "Be the change you want to see." That is what I will be working on. I have never been the change. One of my personal goals is to get involved with "giving back". I have been searching for THE cause that touches me. The other day, I learned about the organization called Child Help. I fell in love. I knew immediately that this is where I want to put my heart. Tomorrow...more details.

I wanted to thank you for reading this. I realize that it isn't all fun and games. There will be those days too. I promise give aways and challenges, questions of the day and things to think about. I plan on sharing knitting instructions and amazing Etsy finds.

The exciting change I will make to my blog is to start each post with my favorite thought for the day. I will take something that made me smile and put it to paper. I suggest that this be something everyone tries.

I'm up and running again! And I have so much to share! It is always all or nothing it seems!

First, I want to post this poem which I'm sure everyone remembers being read in the wedding scene of In Her Shoes. When I first saw the movie, I ran to the computer to find out more about it. I had never heard of it at that point, but I fell in love with the depth of the words and something today, just reminded me of it's beauty. I wanted to "put it to paper", so to say, so that I can read it whenever I want. Remember someone you love when you read it.

A Changing Economy

Well, my laptop is not working yet...I am fearing the worst. For the time being, I will be hopping on my son's computer and you know how that can be ;[ I figure I will try to think happy positive thoughts and it will be fixed in a few days, so for now, no pictures. We'll see how it goes from there.

I have been hard at work learning the prices and sources for the components for a new line of jewelry that I will be introducing very soon. It is always fun to be shopping! I went to Manhattan yesterday and spent like 8 hours comparing one store to another. One thing that really got to me was how much the market is really changing with the times. I went to all of my usual places and was surprised to see such a shift in what they are carrying and how little the selection is. Some shops have closed and new ones have opened. I mostly observed that the massive amounts of semi-precious are gone and there is a switch to glass, wood, and base metal. Funny enough, that is exactly what I was there to purchase!

I have a great stock of Czech glass in many colors and sizes! I have been purchasing wire in brass and copper and as many findings and chains as I can collect. Now I am ready to design away! That is the fun part! I will also be redesigning my Etsy shop and packaging etc. It is a lot of work, but something I feel great about. I feel this new line will be very marketable at the price points that I will be posting and I am anxiously awaiting the response from both the marketplace and my customers!

L:aptop Down

Some bad news... my laptop bit the dust for the time being. Actually, my laptop is the equivalent of dust! It is 6 years old and heavy as hell, and at times, very unreliable. But it has been my faithful friend and it carries every bit of information that is important to me. Isn't it scary how much we rely on these machines?! So for now, I will be blogging minus any pictures. I am using my son's computer and I don't really feel like getting too involved with putting pictures on and learning his programs etc. Hope to be back, up and running soon!

Nothing stops me from talking though! I can always find a way to do that!

I have been working on my Etsy shop a little more diligently, and have even made another sale. Yay! And thanks! I will also be doing a trunk show and a runway show next month. I'll post the particulars next time (I don't have them handy!).

As I have been working on my spring and summer line, I have been rethinking my merchandise strategy (when do I ever stop thinking?!) I want to provide less expensive choices for my customers. I think I talked about that already. By working with brass and copper, I am able to lower my price points. At first, I wasn't very enthusiastic about this, but I am finding that I actually like the look of these other metals! That is a nice thing! They feel very earthy, which is more my style. Let's see where this all goes. It is exciting to me:)

I Made A Sale!

Yesterday,I decided to post five or so of my newer pieces at my Etsy shop. I have been very non-committal about selling there mainly because I have found barely any success with it, but I decided to make an attitude adjustment and get some enthusiasm going ;) Lo and behold, on the very first day, I made a sale! That'll help change your attitude!

I have been watching so many people have at least moderate success with their shops that the truth is, I often feel like I am banging my head against the wall ;{ I have spent SOOOOO many hours trying to figure out what to do differently to create some success. Should I change my product? Should I do more niche jewelry, such as bridal? Should I remain true to what I truly love? Or should I just give up on the jewelry and give knitting a try?

I have even been considering selling cookies again. I had a home based cookie business for 10 years and people do RAVE over my cookies. I was mostly selling baskets of cookies during the holidays and that coincided with my busy period of jewelry sales, so I eventually gave one up for the other. I do truly LOVE making jewelry. At that time, I thought that I could make a go of it, but, for some reason, my business has dwindled since then and the economy is not to blame. This happened at least two years ago. There are many reasons that I can see as being the problem. Whatever the case, I have decided to make some big pushes towards changing them.

I hope that you will help encourage me through these changes, because I could use some suggestions and critiques. I would also like to up my reader numbers on my blog, so I will be starting to have some giveaways and other fun activities! Please gather some friends out there in blogland and send them my way. I hate to beg, but the squeaky wheel gets the oil, as they say, and I'm really in need of some oil!

SNOW!!!

I have been dreaming of spring, like everyone else, and I woke up yesterday morning to 13 inches of snow! Long Island doesn't usually get 13 inches of snow. We sometimes get 2 or 3... maybe 4". But 13?!!!! Jake was thrilled, of course...until he had to shovel. I love the snow, but I am yearning for green grass and flowers. Soon...

Oh, and why is it that come dinner time, everyone is "starving" and "can't wait to eat", but then I stand there calling them to the table for ten minutes? It gets me every time ;[ And my boys are all big boys! They should know better! Some things will never change!

Reusable Hand Knit Market Bag

I have wanted to make one of these for awhile now. It just bothers me to use those plastic bags at the supermarket. I do, but I try to keep it to a minimum. I even bought one of those cheap $1 reusable bags, but it ripped quicker than I could get home!

The other day, I got out my Encyclopedia of Stitches to find an open stitch that would be up for the challenge. I dug around in my stash of cotton yarn and was thrilled to finally put my favorite color to good use... the fact that it is green is no coincidence! Well, yes it is. I am obsessed with this color!

After I finish up the strap to my bag, I'll work on putting the instructions to paper. For those of you who would like to knit this fun and useful project, just check back in a day or two. I'd love to hear from you as well! Make sure to send me some pix of your finished project, too.

Chicken and Broccoli

I love you Momma. Happy Valentine's Day.

My last entry was about jewelry. This time, I have a great recipe to report! My youngest son is obsessed with Chinese food - specifically Chicken and Broccoli. If he doesn't ask to order out at least once a week, something is missing from my week! I finally decided to look up a recipe and see how foreign it seemed. Usually, I am pretty happy to try new recipes. I am fairly confident with my cooking skills, but I have absolutely no idea how to put together Chinese food ingredients!

I sat down with my laptop, and the first recipe I came across received great reviews. I ran out to the store to gather the ingredients and I am excited to say that the results were amazing! Please do give this a try. The kids will even love it. And I threw in other vegetables as well.

1. Gather and prepare the ingredients. This is very helpful. You can do that while the chicken is marinating for the half hour.

2. Cook the chicken. You don't even need a wok! Do Not overcook the chicken.

3. I serve the rice by molding it in a bowl and turning it out in a large bowl. When the ingredients are combined, you can pour them on top. It is fun and easy!

4. The finished product. Yum!

A New Metal

With the change in our economy and the downturn in customer spending, it has become imperative for small businesses to find a way to provide our customers with affordable products. For artists, that means taking a look at the materials that they use to produce their goods. One of the biggest draws to creating jewelry, for me, was the beauty of the natural materials. I have always been so attracted to nature's products. In my attempts to cut costs, it has been a long and hard decision as to what materials I am willing to give up and where to "cut corners". It has always been very important to me to work with natural elements such as sterling and semi-precious stones. When I first began this journey, beads were strictly their own natural shades. A few years later, the showrooms were providing beads that had been dyed in every color. I resisted this trend for a long time until I realized that most customers were just as happy with a dyed stone as with a genuine one.

What I learned from this experience was that it is important to ebb and flow with the times. I will never design purely by the "trend of the moment", but I have accepted that I can be a mediator.

For the past few weeks, I have been busy designing jewelry that is fun and contemporary. As well, I have modified my bead choices and metals to create a line that anyone can afford. For $18 or $20 you can have jewelry that is handmade, unique, and still contains pearls and semiprecious stones. I have paired Czech glass beads with copper and stone beads. I have used brass wire to create my own hand forged findings. I have continued to utilize my signature wirewrapping in my work, but have used brass instead of sterling. I am very pleased with my "pairing down". I hope you are too.

Chicken Pot Pie

I have been dreading the old "what to make for dinner" question lately. Nothing seems to be coming to mind. I know that there are a lot of bloggers who post about their dinner ideas, I should keep track of them better! I decided to blog about my success so that I can search them up when I need inspiration. I made this up as I went along - I tend to cook that way. Please enjoy them if they sound good to you, too! This recipe is all about APPROXIMATES including time and oven temperature. Don't be afraid to try what you like in this dish!

Filling
1 carrot sliced
1 onion diced
1/2 cup peas
1 stalk celery diced
2 small potatoes diced

Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, a dash of poultry seasoning and a dash of cayenne pepper.Sautee until soft.

Sauce:
2T. flour
2T. butter
2 cups chicken broth

Melt butter. Add flour and stir for 5 minutes on medium heat. Add chicken broth, bring to a boil and whisk until thickened.

In a casserole dish, combine 2 cups diced cooked chicken and vegetable mixture. Pour the sauce over to combine.

Topping:
1 cup Bisquick
1 egg
1/2 cup milk

Whisk together ingredients for topping. It will be loose. Pour over casserole.

Bake in 350 degree oven for approx. 40 minutes.

I am finally back. It has been a long while. I hope that everyone has had a wonderful holiday season. I took some time to try and figure out some "things". As far as my professional life is concerned, I have been very conflicted for quite some time. There is so much about having your own company that is amazing, but I don't have to tell you that it is a very difficult journey that never ends. It takes a specific kind of person to endure and I have been contemplating if I am just that kind of person.

And on top of that, I can't decide which venue I actually want to pursue. There are so many aspects of both jewelry making and knitting that I sooooo want to experience on a constant basis. The jewelry industry is so gratifying, but it is like a shark pit and I have not figured out how to successfully handle that. The competition is fierce and those of you who know me know that I am not an aggressive person. In fact, it often seems like I gift more than I sell.

Knitting is more of a specialized industry, but I live to knit. There are more opportunities than ever to make a living in this industry and I am so tempted to try it, but all I can hear in my head is, "There she goes again trying something new..." One of the problems with being creative is that you always want to experience more. Actually, that is only really a problem with the wallet!

So all this contemplation leads me to wonder how to structure my blog. Should it be a Knitting blog or a Jewelry blog? I don't get much of a following and honestly, it gets frustrating. I take some time off to try to figure out how better to structure it and then I just get more unsure. Do you think that I think too much????? Yup. I'm a thinker. I just can't help it;{

Since there are no immediate answers, I guess I will just keep writing about everyday life - be it knitting or jewelry or one of the hundred other things that I like to do. Stay tuned!

First, let me say that I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. This year seemed to go by so quickly!

On the jewelry front, I was wandering around the net tonight and was so excited to come across Julie Strating's new website! She is an amazing make-up artist in Michigan who works in the bridal field as well as the fashion industry. Her work is fresh and fun and extremely fashion forward, yet soft and wistful when need be. Her talent is apparent.

I am proud to say that I enthusiastically supplied my jewels for her models to wear in the fashion shoot for her new site! The photographer, Amy Carroll, took the most amazing pictures at this session and it is so exciting to me to see it all come together. Please take a peek at their sites. Preemie Hats

I have been knitting preemie hats on and off for about a year now and I finally did the finishing on them. I have been putting off making tassels and pompoms for some reason, but I kept thinking about how cute these little ones will look in them. My goal was to come up with really funky cute styles that would bring a smile and some levity to a possibly tense situation. Can you picture a baby that fits in the palm of your hand wearing this?

It felt so wonderful going to the hospital and handing a bag full of love and warmth over to the nurse. I hope that this post inspires someone to knit for charity. It just feels so right.

My Doggie is in TROUBLE!!!

So my husband let the dogs in this morning and came upstairs to tell me that Colby smelled HORRIBLE. I give my maltese a bath once a week, but the big ones...they are too big! And too expensive to have groomed! This stink couldn't be ignored and soon I heard DH running the bath. A minute later, I heard "Oh s@#$%*t!" I couldn't imagine what could be wrong, but I saw Ira looking out the window at the backyard. It wasn't good. This is what we saw.

Our beautiful pond that Ira so beautifully built was dug up and shredded to pieces. I haven't seen such disappointment on his face for a very long time. This was a centerpiece in our backyard. There was a rat living in there and Colby wanted a piece of it.

I've been busily making earrings and a few simple necklace styles for my open house tomorrow night. I am offering free earrings to anyone bringing a new friend, as well as a door prize and other goodies. I sure hope that someone shows up! I handed out 35 invitations and received 2 rsvp's. Why do people do that?

I wanted to post pictures of some new designs that I created, but it is cloudy as can be out and so there won't be any picture taking today. I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Check back. I think I'll offer one as a free gift for the holidays. I'll post the rules tomorrow or, most likely, the next day.

A quick comment... I came across the photo editing site named picnik and I am in love! I have been looking for something as straight forward as this program for a long time. Everything makes sense and there are so many options! And the best thing is that it is FREE! Run to check it out :) I am.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight?

Oh my gosh, I had the most incredible day yesterday! I got to be all fan girly when I went to a local knit shop, Three Black Sheep, and saw a presentation by the talented and sweet Debbie Bliss. She has been my idol ever since I started knitting so long ago! I brought along her original knitting to sign. The publish date was 1992! She was thrilled to see it and immediately turned the pages to show me her daughter modeling one of her creations! It was a fun moment.

I also connected with a lovely lady who invited me to join in a knitting group that she is involved in. I am very anxious to meet other people who have similar interests as I do. I have realized, lately, that I am desperately in need of that. I spend way too much time alone and it is time to get out more. Thanks for the invitation! I hope this will be the start of some fun relationships.

I also wanted to thank the owners of Three Black Sheep for the fantastic event that they coordinated for the sake of their clients. I hope that you had as much fun as it seemed!

Yesterday was one of those days that you remember for a long, long time. Joshua bought my husband and I tickets to see The Lion King in Manhattan. I have heard so many wonderful things about the production and Josh raved about it when he saw it with his girlfriend. He loved it so much that he bought us the tickets :)

Besides the play being such an incredible presentation, it also holds a special place in my heart, as it was the first movie that my first child fell in love with. I can vividly remember Josh in his high chair, throwing cheerios over the side and singing "hakunahmatada, what a wonderful phrase"! or his own version of it! The story is also very meaningful in that it is about a son's relationship with his father as he grows up and out on his own. Yeah. That is where Josh is at, too.

Well, let me tell you...it was the most incredible event I have seen in a long while! The costumes, the music, the enthusiasm, the acting, and the story all came together in a magical moment. I can't put it a better. I cried for the first ten minutes. It was so beautiful and overwhelming. I won't ever forget it. Thank you my sweet son. You know your mommy well.

The Calm Before The Storm

I'm curled up next to my fireplace and it is quiet for a few minutes. My boys are at their friends' houses and my hubby is out getting some ingredients that he forgot the first time! I decided to warm up and wish all of you a very wonderful, happy, and healthy Thanksgiving. This is my absolute favorite time of year and I couldn't be more excited to share it with family (Josh is finally home from college) and friends.

Tomorrow, we will be visiting my MIL who lives nearby. I am baking some cookies, making a traditional favorite called Kugel, and I'm going to try the pumpkin chocolate cheesecake on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens. It looked so yummy that I had to try it. I'll let you know if it tastes as good as it looks!

On the jewelry front, I have spent the past two days getting more familiar with some very basic metalsmithing techniques. I have always wanted to hone my skills and broaden my techniques. I have a passion for metal and I would love to learn more skills. I actually took a session of classes at a local art league, but left more frustrated than I began. It has been quite a few years and my curiosity has kicked in again :) I am just working on simple hoops and such, but I find it mesmerizing. The hours just fly by. I am hoping to add more handmade elements to my fashion jewelry soon. Please check back often as I post pictures of my learning curve!

I'm Making A Marf!

In case you don't know what a marf is, I'll explain! I think I have shared how I wish my boys would have been more open to wearing anything that I knit for them. I have been knitting for all of their 18 years and except for when they were babies, I have never been able to interest them in anything I made. Well, the day has come! My son goes to college in Geneseo, NY and it is COLD there. Josh asked me to make him a scarf... hence, marf!

That's college humor. Except that I think it is funny, too! I hope it gave you a chuckle, too :)

It seems that we are all busily getting our homes and menus in order in time for Thanksgiving. It is almost a nesting sort of feeling... a feeling that is both calming and soothing to me amidst all the chaos. Over time, I have learned to step back away from it all and keep myself focused on the important aspects of time with the family. Being a control lover, I have had to teach myself that it is more important to include my children in the baking rather than to worry about the mess.

I am proud to say that I have stuck to my guns and have raised two competent boys who know their way around the kitchen. Jacob, my youngest, is especially happy to help me. We have spent some really great time together preparing foods.

I came across this recipe through a wonderful blog called A Friend To Knit With, and I am so excited to try it! I'll give you an update with some pictures.

Chez Panisse Gingersnaps

- 8 oz (220g) salted butter
- 1 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp (280g) sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract/paste
- 2 small eggs or 1 1/2 large eggs
- 1/3 C (114g) molasses
- 3 C (360g) all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp ground black pepper

(Yields about 70 cookies.)

Cream butter until soft. Add sugar, and beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat again. Add molasses and beat until well incorporated.

Sift together the dry ingredients and add into the mixture. Mix until it all just comes together. Line a 9" x 5" (22 x 12 cm) loaf pan with plastic wrap, so that some hangs over the sides. Press the dough into the bottom of the pan, pack it tightly, and try to make the top as level as possible. Cover the dough with the plastic overhangs. Freeze until very firm, preferably overnight.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Remove dough from the pan and unwrap from one side. Slice the "brick" into very thin slices, no more than 1/10" (2mm). Place the slices on the cookie sheet (give them a little room, they will expand) and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the edges turn brown to dark brown (depending on how cooked and crispy you like them). Turn out on a rack to cool completely.

And to Think...I Married A Stone!

Five years ago, I made up my mind to learn how to make jewelry, I have LOVED jewelry from as far back as I have memories. As a child, I was fortunate to travel around the country many times over. My parents were both teachers and my grandparents lived in California. My dad decided on a different route to see them each summer and my brother, mom and I set off in our camper the day that school got out. If you asked me at the time if I realized how wonderful this opportunity was, I probably would have said that I missed my friends. But that is how kids think and I was a typical kid! You know...they always like to play with the box rather than the toy when they are little!!!

As an adult, I absolutely realize how lucky I was. I have been to every state in the country, with the exception of Alaska. And I've seen just about every National Park, as well. All along our journeys, I was kept busy by reading and by crafting. My parents got me what was called an Indian bead loom. Today, the beads are commonly called seed beads. I was influenced by the beautiful Indian jewelry that I saw on our journeys. Turquoise and silver was prevalent and I even found small specimens of this beautiful stone in the earth. I treasure those finds. Along the way, I met American Indians where we camped and they showed me simple techniques with my beads. My family mined for rubies and sapphires in North Carolina and amethyst in Ontario. We panned for gold in California.

We also did many many other unrelated activities, but I constantly find my mind wandering back to the memories related to my love for jewelry making. I think I have always known that I was made to enjoy this craft. I am so thankful that I made my way back to it. It wasn't by chance. There are no accidents. It warms my heart to think that at 5 years old, I had such an avid interest in rocks, minerals, beads and the like. And to think, I grew up and married a STONE!!!

I'm not quite sure why I posted about this topic, but I did. I guess I have been feeling a bit nostalgic with Thanksgiving approaching. I can't wait for Joshua to be home from college. I miss his extra right now. I love you hun.

Finding A Direction

It's been a while. Really, I needed to take a break from all of "this" and get my head set in a direction. I mentioned this a few entries ago, so I won't go into detail. But I took the time I needed, resolved a few of my own personal issues and am ready to get going again.

One of the issues I have is that I find myself involved in too many different activities and not committing to any one thing enough to find success. As is with most creative people, there are a few different venues that I am successful in and enjoy enough to build a business around. I have spent so much time analyzing what I think customers would want to buy and the like, that I have lost track of what it is that I started out to accomplish. When I haven't found success, I tried a different idea. This continued until I had lost my way. It has been discouraging, to say the least, but I am ready to focus and find my way. If you have any advice, please feel free to chime in. I could use some direction!

I have finally realized that in order for a business to be successful, no matter what the merchandise, you need to be good at selling. Alas, I am not. That is my biggest, and so far, only obstacle. Naively, I set out on this journey thinking that if you have a good product, the customers would come. That only happens in fairytale land! What was I thinking???? Don't get me wrong. Some people are just plain LUCKY! But I have realized that planning and perseverance are the answer. Now to learn how to accomplish that! That is my goal at this point. Again, any advice is always accepted!!!

So when I get upset, I bake. My son, who is in college, benefits from all my bad moods!!! Come to think of it, my first attempt at running my own business was baking cookies. For 10 years, I perfected baking cookies. So I can actually say that I quite enjoy baking. The other day, I baked up a few batches of Giant Gingerbread cookies. They make my house smell beyond yummy! And they taste wonderful, too! See how well-used my recipe card is!?!

As I was adding all of the wonderful spices to the flour, I realized how pretty the rich colors looked. That is nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.

In Bliss Over Debbie Bliss!

If you have followed my blog, you know that I am a jewelry designer who is equally an avid knitter. I have been knitting for twenty something years and there are so many vivid memories that I have of when I first began to knit. I remember the feeling I got when I was creating. I would sit with my future MIL and grandMIL and marvel at their creations. But there were a few things that I was so dissatisfied with. The cheap acrylic yarns that were available to me were scratchy and smelled bad and the color choices were awful. And even worse were the choices of patterns so "grandma-ish")!!!

I tried to ignore these factors for awhile, but they were increasingly annoying! Then one day, as I was lost in the yarn department of Lee Wards (anyone remember that place?), I came upon this book that would open up a new world for me! The author/designer was named Debbie Bliss and I HAD to have this book! I remember spending $25 for it and trying to justify that I would make every single pattern in the book. $25 was a lot of money 25 years ago. But I had to have this book. And do you know... I still create many a pattern from that book to this day!

Well, Debbie Bliss was to knitting what Martha Stewart was to crafting and home decor. Ms. Bliss brought fresh ideas and innovative patterns to knitters all over the world. Her designs had a new and exciting look to them and her she brought new colored yarn to market. Knitting was able to take on a modern, urban look and other designers jumped on the bandwagon. It finally became exciting to knit again! And I was all over it!

Jumping ahead 15 or 20 years, (ouch!), I have an exciting engagement to look forward to! On December 4th, I am going to a local knit shop called Three Black Sheep in St. James, NY,, to meet Debbie Bliss!!!! I am super excited!!! I can't even imagine how lucky I am that she will be visiting down the road from me! It will be one of those "moments" for me as she is obviously one of my role models.

Me Being Real

Warning: This is me being REAL.

It has been quite awhile since I've posted. The truth is that I needed some time away from this whole blogging thing. I was becoming increasingly frustrated and confused about the direction (or lack there of) that my business and blog were taking. I was spending so much time thinking that I was beginning to question myself and my decisions. Being an independent artist and businesswomen is mentally exhausting... especially when your business is at a standstill. It is very difficult to forge forward when things just don't seem to progress the way you want them to.

I have made myself step back and take a hard look at what I am doing and why. I have been forcing myself to ask the hard questions, many of which I have little answers to. I spend so much time reading about other's positive experiences and it makes me wonder what is missing on my end.

As I thought about my struggles, I was reminded of the reason that I began my journey in jewelry design and creation. I fell in love with the detailed work. I am mesmerized by the stones and the metal. I thoroughly enjoy creating a design that I dreamed up and is mine alone. Jewelry is a token. It has meaning and memories that go along with it. And I adore being responsible for my small part in that.

My knitting is also close to my heart. I can't go a day without it. I began to think that I should switch over to marketing my hand knits. I opened an etsy shop and went right to work. I even designed my own pieces! I have had no luck with that either. All it did was make my head spin: more hard questions and little answers. I did come to the realization, though, that having a business is more about selling than the product. I will have to stop trying to match the product to the customer. It won't work if I am unsuccessful at selling. It took me too many years to realize this.

The blogging, I have to admit, has been fun, yet very frustrating. I really enjoy everything about it, but don't understand why no one takes the time to talk with me. I know that I am not the most interesting person out there, but I so want to have some friends to talk shop with. It is so disappointing to see "0" comments day after day! You begin to wonder why you are spending so much time and effort. And yet, people do frequent my blog. I know you are out there!!!

I guess I have some decisions to make. I don't want to have to give up my jewelry. It is in my heart. But I also have the need to be a part of something bigger. I need to feel some success and I wonder if working for someone else would be better for me. Truth is, I need to find a job that will use my creativity and I have no idea of where to find that type of work.

So as I spend some more sleepless nights thinking about what to do with myself, I hope that you all have peace with your paths! :)

L. Stone Designs Knitwear

I've got pictures! I'm so excited to share with you what I have been working on for the past few weeks! I have been knitting and knitting and I have some final products to share. I have not finished opening my Etsy shop, yet, though. I hope to have that in place tomorrow. So, if you just have to have one of these pieces, just leave me a message or email me and I will get right back to you!

For years, I have been trying to figure out how to include knitting into what I offer to my customers. I tried my hand at writing some patterns, something I have been so excited to do. In the future, I plan on including them at my Etsy shop! So if you see something you like and you want to create it yourself, you'll be able to! I hope that you find my knitwear to be both fashion forward and fun to wear. I want my customers to be able to cozy up with my designs while feeling fantastically stylish! I have purposefully chosen yarns that will feel great and look wonderful, yet still remain at a reasonable price point. I am very open to custom designs regarding size, color, style, and even yarn choice.

As far as yarn choice is concerned, I will be offering two price points.

1. Luxe - My Luxe line will include mostly synthetic yarns that will have a long lifetime, but will show wear more quickly than more luxurious yarns. Most synthetic yarns can be machine washed, although I highly suggest hand washing.

2. DeLuxe - My DeLuxe line will encompass the higher-end wools and natural fibers. These fibers include "green" sustainable materials, such as soy, silk, bamboo and cotton yarns. The softness and wear is incomparable. Other Deluxe yarns include Alpaca, Llama, cashmere, and a wide variety of handspun yarns. Items knit with these yarns will need to be hand washed and laid flat to dry.

Most styles can be made using either price point yarn. The differences between the qualities include the amount of warmth and durability, the richness, strength, and feel of the fibers, and an overall luxuriousness. To me, there is no comparison between the two levels of yarn. The warmth and feel of the "real stuff" is well worth the extra cost, but it remains important to me to provide choices so that everyone can find a product that is right for them. If you are unsure of your choice, please just contact me. Together, we will find the perfect combination.

Happy Rosh Hashana

I'm wishing you all who celebrate, a peaceful and prosperous new year full of love and laughter. This year, my holiday was brighter than I originally expected due to the fact that Josh was home from college. It was so wonderful to see him. I don't think I realized how much I was missing him until I saw his face at the airport. I was trying so hard to readjust to life with him away that I wasn't letting myself feel those feelings. When he appeared at the airport, I couldn't get to him fast enough! My family felt "whole" again. This time, I will have that feeling to look forward to for next time. I love you honey. And I am so proud of you for loving being at school. It is a gift for both you and Daddy and I.

The Mets lost. For those of you who don't know, we are die hard Mets fans. I mean, we don't skip a game (on tv usually). It has been an integral part of my childrens' upbringing. We have attended Mets spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fl. since the kids were old enough to make the trip. Ira and I never planned it to be that way. It just sort of happened. I love that we saw the kiddies respond with such enthusiasm and were able to build on it. It gives me such a warm feeling. That is what families do. Well, this weekend, I found the four of us at Shea Stadium, watching our team lose our quest for the play-offs, but more importantly, saying goodbye to our stadium. My children and I were brought up attending Shea. Most memorable was the fact that the ceremony included many of the most incredible baseball players in history, let alone Met history. It was a memory that we won't soon forget. I know my children will tell their children all about it.

We took over 200 pictures that day and we haven't gone through them yet, but as soon as I can, I will post some of them. Check back soon.

Oh my gosh you guys! I am so excited to share these pictures with everyone!!! Amy Carroll, of Amy Carroll Photography, whose work I have such admiration for, contacted me recently about supplying some jewelry for a photoshoot that she was doing for a client. WOULD I ?!!! Hmmm. Let me think about that. YES!

Sorry I have been here so infrequently. I have actually been very busy working on another project as well as my jewelry. It has always been a dream of mine to somehow incorporate knitting into my career goals. It is my first love and has always been there for me ;) Since it takes quite awhile to complete a knitting project, it has been a challenge to figure out a way to make it all work out.

Flower Girl Jewelry!

Yesterday, I mentioned that I have been working on a line of jewelry for flower girls. The pieces that I came up with are designed to be "big girl" styles - a bit like "mommy's jewelry", just scaled down to little girl size. I wanted this line to give a flower girl a sophisticated look that would also photograph well, yet still allow the nature of a child to come through. How is that for a mouthful?! In other words, children should be children, but they can also look dressed up like mommy, too.

This adorable little set of charms includes a beautiful petal pearl, a swarovski crystal in your choice of color, and a dainty sterling puffed heart all hanging from a sterling chain. For little ones, I always choose chains that are sturdy and as always, I utilize wire wrapping methods that eliminate the need for any jumprings. All connections are wrapped closed.

And finally, this piece is made from peachy/pink pearls and faceted rose quartz.

Flower Girl Accessories

So I've been working on a special request order for Tami at September's Bride. She asked if I could put together a line of flower girl jewelry for her shop. I was happy to oblige and set about the design process. It is always fun to think through the eyes of a little girl! My ideas have been put to beads, wire and chain, and I will be photographing them tomorrow. It is always exciting to see what you think, so please let me know what you think. I am especially happy with a necklace that I created using a bow theme. What little girl doesn't love a little bow and sparkle?!

Update on Josh

So my son has been at college for a week now and I am excited to say that he is very happy there! He is good friends with his roommate and his roommate's friends and he has adjusted immediately to it all! It is very comforting to me to know that he made the right decision for himself and that he is not at all homesick. His father has had to tell him to call me twice so far. He wasn't missing me at all I guess! In fairness to him, his brand new laptop crashed on the second day and that was all he could think about! That is how boys are... Dell came through with a new hard drive and he was back in action a few days later. Hope all goes more smoothly in the computer department for him. He takes it all so seriously.

Filling In With Some Pictures

So I got some pictures together of my son's adventure. I feel like I need to complete this chapter before I move on to jewelry and knitting! It seems like the rest is not important in comparison. There really isn't much to say, except that the pictures tell the story.

This is when having all boys is a good thing!

It was a little frustrating to move a BOY into a dorm room. I sooooo wanted to hang curtains and put a fluffy rug on the floor! Josh wouldn't hear from any of my ideas.

Wow, I never realized that our hair is exactly the same color! I have a few grays in there that he doesn't ;) This picture is comforting to me in some strange way.

Maggie had to be in on everything! She is so lovable. The RA actually checked with me to make sure that we were taking her home with us!

Back in The Swing of Things!

It is time to get back in to the swing of things. This summer has been a little rough for me as I have been getting my oldest son set for college. I just felt like I needed to spend my time with my family as much as possible because it was about to change in a way that I could never get back again. I made jewelry like crazy, getting ready for the new seasons, but as far as being in touch via computer, I took a break.

We dropped Joshua off at college last weekend. It was as hard as I thought. Josh has been such an easy and enjoyable kid to raise, as well as a buddy of mine, that I never had any reason to want him to go... except that it was time. When we arrived back home, I couldn't bring myself to get out of the car. He wasn't here any more and it really hit me.

I have had a few days to adjust and I am feeling a bit better. I still can't get used to the idea that it will be such a long time until I can see him. He has been wonderful about calling us, though. I am grateful for that. It is so different than when we went to college. Computers and cell phones make things so much more bearable!

I'll start posting more regularly now. I have some new ideas and some new pictures to share. Tomorrow is another day!

Off To Geneseo...

Well, there's no stopping time. We are off to Josh's college orientation. It is a two day program and he actually stays overnight in the dorms with a roommate, so he will get a taste of what's to come. And I will too. We are going to be staying at my brother-in-law's property in the mountains and I am really looking forward to some nature and camp fires. I have been craving some nature recently, so this fits right in.

On a Break...Not!

It was great to take a little break this past week to stop thinking a bit! When you work for yourself, it is so great to have the freedom to do what you want when you want. But along with that freedom comes an awful lot of responsibility for your time. You never stop thinking about your business. The switch never turns off. That works fine with me, because I never stop thinking about what I am making anyway! But it does get to a point that you HAVE to turn it off!

So I substituted jewelry with knitting! I spent a week obsessing over finding wedding shrug instructions and wedding bolero directions. I spent hours upon hours on the web. I knitted at least 100 swatches on every size needle to find the perfect combinations of yarn and stitch. I went to Barnes and Nobles and scoured through knitting and bridal magazines. I drew ideas and combined instructions. And then I realized that I needed a break from knitting, so I picked up my jewelry tools to make a necklace that was calling to me.

Am I ever on a break? Thank goodness, no. My hands must be kept busy at all times. And my brain must be planning and figuring just as often. That is the "curse" of a creative person. I don't consider it a curse though. I wake up every morning, and instead of reaching for the coffee, I reach for the needles. I plan my day over a few rows of knitting. Is this strange? I'm not sure, but there is one thing I know for certain...it is ME!

Today, I received an email from a recent bride whom I'd been in contact with a few months ago. Kristin first approached me after finding my company through a conversation I had with someone at Martha Stewart's chat room. We conversed back and forth for a few weeks and I became familiar with her plans for a beautiful wedding. She sent me pictures of her bridesmaids' gowns as well as her's, in preparation for my designing their jewelry.

Unfortunately for me, and unbeknownst to the bride, her maids bought all of their jewelry independently as a favor for her and I was abruptly out of the picture! Kristin, as sweet as she is, promised to contact me when she settled in to married life and that is just what she did! The pictures that she sent me completed the cycle and I greatly appreciate her thoughtfulness. It really means so much to me to see the end result of all the planning! Thank you Kristin and I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness with your family!

Oh, The Places You'll Go!

Well, it happened. There was no stopping it. Joshua graduated from his high school, Ward Melville. I actually thought I'd be fine. I was there to celebrate my son's hard work and accomplishments. I was all set to yell and scream when they called his name. We even located him in the sea of 650 fellow graduates. I was lucky enough to remember my zoom lens and I could even take great pictures of him from so far away. All of my family was there and the storms that were predicted were non existent. Everything was sailing along perfectly until a speaker began to read a poem by Dr. Seuss' called Oh, The Places You'll Go!

One of the most favorite memories we have from when my kids were little, was all the love that my husband gave them by reading with them. Ira looked forward to this more than they did, if that was even possible! He is such a silly man and he was so animated as he read to them every night. He made games up as he went along and he acted things out, etc. Needless to say, Dr. Seuss was one of his favorites. As a matter of fact, I have his Dr. Seuss books from when he was a young child.

Well, there I was on the verge of celebration, when this lady began to read in verse. My ears tuned in and I realized what I was listening to. The tears immediately began to flow and I couldn't hold back my emotions. Ira grabbed for my hand. This poem was meant to be read at my child's graduation. It has so many meaningful messages to be made known. I urge you to follow the link above and read it for yourself. Take the moment. It is for all ages.

So I gathered myself and wiped my tears. I found the enthusiasm to whoop it up as they announced Joshua's name. I even snapped some of the greatest pictures that I would like to share. Thank you for sharing in my special moment.

Prom Time!

All went beautifully! I am happy to say that Josh's prom was beautiful. Even the weather held out. Storms were called for and the sun came out instead! Joshua looked so handsome and Melody was beautiful. We took tons of pictures and then sent them on their way.

You can't see the dresses all that well, but can you believe that the girls did not plan their dresses to be those colors?!!! I kept saying ROYGBIV ! They looked like the colors of a rainbow! All they needed was orange and purple. And their dresses were so appropriate as well.

I love you Josh. I hope that this is just the beginning of a lifetime of happiness and fun times.

Last Minute Prom Plans

There is nothing like waiting for the last minute! We have been prepping for Prom and graduation for weeks with my son. We have tried to tie him down to letting us know what his plans are. Is that too much to ask? We ordered his tux weeks ago. His girlfriend got her dress months ago! I wanted to make her jewelry as a gift, but I could never get her to tell me what she wanted. I only see her almost every day! So there I am trekking into Manhattan, yesterday, on the last possible day. I got the crystals that I thought would best match her gown and sat in hours of traffic and a thunderstorm all the way home. The things we do for our children!!!

Today, the day before the Prom, my son asks if everyone could come over after the Prom to sleep over. Now don't get me wrong. I am thrilled that I will know where they are and what they are doing! But I need time to get prepared! It isn't like we have been asking for weeks for him to let us know! Well...he did! Oh and I spent the entire day making Melody's jewelry! I hope she'll like it because there is no time left to change it! I'll post pictures tomorrow of the final "look"! I'm too tired to take pictures now!

Leanna's Recital

It is funny, the way emotions sometimes creep up on you. My oldest child is on the verge of going off into the world as he graduates and goes to college. I have been able to keep those emotions as they should be. As a matter of fact, I have actually been feeling excited for him. It has been feeling like the natural progression for him.

Today, I went to see my niece dance at her recital. The first group of 5 year olds came out in all of their adorable glory. I said my usual "awww how cute!" and promptly began to sob. I am talking, full out sob. I needed tissues as the tears kept flowing. My tears were not for my adorable Leanna. Not this time. This time, my tears were for my own child. All of a sudden, I became very aware that there would be no more innocence, such as this, in my life. I have always been a "mommy" at heart. The only time that I feel totally at one with myself is when I am in the mommy capacity. I am transitioning from that and I feel like I am losing a part of myself.

I know that this is all part of life, but it doesn't make it any easier. Joshua will be attending his Prom on Thursday and will graduate on Saturday. I'll post my "proud momma" pictures later in the week.

Nicole's Wedding Day!

I am so excited to share some beautiful pictures with you all! A few months back, I was hard at work designing jewelry for a customer of mine named Nicole. We had lots of fun, and because she worked in the same building that my studio is in, we were able to meet in person and do what girls do best...shop and talk! Nicole's Aunt came with her to the first meeting and we began with pictures of gowns and lots of samples of jewelry. We tried on many different styles and began narrowing down some choices. Nicole went away from our first meeting with a smile on her face and way too much information!

Over the next few weeks, we further narrowed down her choices until she became sure of what she wanted. I gave Nicole a while to sleep on her decisions and then went to work. I must say that I was so very excited to work on her necklace. We actually took a headpiece from my collection and fashioned a necklace from the same style. It is such a gorgeous intricate piece, if I say so myself ;) I am hoping to have this piece professionally photographed soon. Amy Carroll...call me!

We decided that the necklace was such a statement that Nicole would wear a classic styled clip in her hair. I created a simple Swarovski pattern for her to wear. Doesn't her hair look perfect? Anything else would have looked overdone.

I am waiting for pictures of the Bridesmaids' chokers and earrings. I will share them when they arrive.

Filling Orders

I've been happily busy with my current bride's order. She has given me fun design challenges and I am so appreciative of her involvement. I have always been the kind of person to tear pages out of magazines and keep sketches of things I love. It makes it so much easier to describe what I am thinking of. So I have this connection with people who are like that! Haley has been wonderful, directing me along with pictures and descriptions. It is so much easier for me to create jewelry that is what she is thinking about. Thanks Haley! Here are some pictures of another earring choice. I thought you might like this style even better!

Shrugs and Bolero

I have always considered being creative a gift. I don't mean a gift like in caliber of talent, but a gift given to me for myself. Does that make any sense? Anyway, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have the ability to create. It is my savior - my sanity! Really, it is how my brain thinks. And thinking is all I ever do! Just ask my husband! The one curse about being creative, is that you never get tired of trying new things. Everything is a venture that you just have to experience!

The other day, I was reading an entry in one of my favorite wedding blogs, Perfect Bound, and I came across the topic of brides wearing shrugs. Brides are needing something to wear over their shoulders when they are in their place of worship, as well as to keep them warm. The lightbulb light brightly and hasn't shut off since. I am a knitter and I love to knit lace. I also love to design my own patterns and I just got so inspired by the idea of creating fashionable stylish shrugs in the colors that a bride would like

I spent the other day surfing the net to get more acquainted with what brides are interested in and I am happily knitting my first sample. I will post pictures as I go along. Inspired From Mom's Prom Necklace

I've been working on another order for a bride and her bridesmaids that I wanted to share. Her gown is one of the most beautiful gowns and I feel so honored to be able to create her jewelry for her wedding. The gown is lacy, elegant, and classy and the necklace that she chose will look so perfect with it. It is funny. As a designer, just as for anyone who creates, there are some designs that just "WORK". Then there are some designs that you are happy with. This design WORKS!

The necklace that she ordered was actually inspired by my fond memories of my Mom's prom necklace! I came across her necklace as a young girl and I treasured it. Mom's necklace reminded me of a princess necklace - all sparkly and regal! When I came upon a particular strand of exquisite quartz crystal barrel shaped beads, my mind went directly to that old necklace. I knew just what to do. Stay tuned for pictures of my "Alyssa" piece.

We have been working on designing necklaces for her bridesmaids. Their dresses are a deep chocolate brown with an open back. We decided upon a smokey quartz and pearl chain that ties in the back and hangs gracefully. I am very pleased with the resulting design. It took three tries to find the perfect combination of size, shape and pattern. I hope the bride is also pleased!

And the earring choices are soft and simple. I hand formed the earring wires and adorned them with creamy white, good sized pearls. Her girls will definitely get plenty of use from whichever combination of wire styles and pearl dangle she decides upon.

20th Anniversary Celebration!

I usually talk about other peoples' weddings, but today I am going to talk about myself! On Thursday, my husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary! I can hardly believe that I am saying this. But actually, I feel very proud of it. 2o years is a very long time and actually, we were together for 7 years before that! When our rabbi officiated our wedding (he knew both of us well) he actually pronounced us man and wife and said, "Finally!".

Well a lot has happened in those 20 years and I have cherished every single moment. I am looking forward to the next 50-60 years! I am wishing you all the experience of finding long lasting love in your lives.

Knot Just Pearls

I was thinking, I try to talk only about wedding things here because I have another blog for everything else. I realized that you know nothing about me, other than that I make bridal jewelry. Upon realizing this, it became clear to me that it is actually important to share who I am and what I do. I want to get to know my blog friends and my customers! So wedding themes aside, sit back and enjoy the ride. And make sure you share back. That is what blogging is for!

I've been into photography lately. A few months ago, my DH, with an emphasis on D, bought me a Nikon D40x. Now I know that photographers are reading this blog (hi Amy!) and you all have MUCH better equipment, but for an amateur, this is a great camera. It is so important to me to have quality pictures to represent my work. Aside from that, I have LOVED photography since I was a child. I am having such fun taking pictures of everything that catches my eye.

I love nature and as I age, nature becomes more and more beautiful and important to me. I also love flowers. Who doesn't?!

I love dogs, especially cuddly little fluffy white ones.

Color Combinations

One of the most exciting aspects of designing jewelry, for me, is that I get to play with the most beautiful shades of color. The biggest inspiration for color combinations can be taken from nature. Here, there are no mistakes. Have you ever seen a bird whose feathers clash? Or a plant that blooms ugly colored flowers? The saying "It contains every color under the rainbow." is used to describe something that is rich with color! I have always been attracted to gorgeous, rich color. Sometimes, I think that I see more shades than most! Choosing a paint can be torturous for me! In the end, though, I consider it to be a privilege. This photo, taken by Amy Carroll, is a fine composition of Color with a capitol "C"! Actually, I should give the bride,Dana, kudos for her choices. Just had to share.

Happy Mother's Day again! Wow! I didn't expect to be able to write two entries in one weekend! But here I am!!! I had a wonderful Mom's Day. I hope you all got to spend time with someone special.

I wanted to share a picture of my Alexis necklace on an actual model wearing a gorgeous wedding gown by Justin Alexander! My Alexis necklace is a flawless quality, faceted, bold, round, quartz crystal strand. It is a statement piece, yet I designed it to be understated. Thank you for the picture, Tami. Happy Mother's Day To All My Friends

I just wanted to send a very Happy Mother's Day wish to all my blog friends! It is such a special thing to be a mommy! I had a heartwarming "mommy" experience last night. Those moments don't happen as often when our children are in their teens, but now and again, they just surprise you! My oldest, Josh, is driving now and working, and becoming more and more self-sufficient. This is his first Mother's Day that he wasn't dependent on anyone else to think about taking care of getting gifts. We were sitting down last night cozying up to watch a movie and he jumped up and said that he couldn't wait anymore to give me his gift! Mind you, it was Friday night! He proudly came in with a seating chart printed out from the Lion King on Broadway!! He bought second row center seats for my hubby and I to see a Broadway play!!! Need I say more?!!

The most special part of this story is that Lion King holds a very special place in our hearts. It was THE Disney movie from when he was old enough to want to watch. He used to watch it two and three times a day. Back then, animated films were released few and far between, so it was a much anticipated event. Being a music and Disney lover, I had the soundtrack in the car so my kids could sing along. Remember, there were no tvs in the cars at that time! Only radio. I remember my kids bebopping to Hakunamatada!!! As a matter of fact, it is on my ipod right now! GREAT memories...

Thanks for going down memory lane with me for a moment! That is what Mother's Day is about for me! I hope you all take the time to have your own moments too!

I've been working so hard to meet other women in the bridal and jewelry industries who, like me, are working for themselves. It is so important to me because I don't know any other creative people and I yearn to connect with other people who are like me! Sounds sappy, but I am experiencing that part of my life I guess! I bet there are a lot of women who feel like I do, but don't want to put it out there! I thought I would. Just saying...

So I am talking about this because I am feeling very happy today! My computer networking seems to be taking root and I have been receiving warm reception from quite a few women, both clients and perspective co-workers. It feels positive and wonderful! And I thank you all for your support and kindness.

Amy Carroll is sending me pictures and has actually requested that I send her my jewelry so that she can photograph it. I can't say how gratifying that feels :D . Of course I will! I am honored.

Tami has requested some bridesmaids pieces and some more classic looks. Here is a peek!

Hey! Does anyone notice something different? I conquered my header!!!! I finally got it to be positioned exactly where it should be! And I had a banner made to coordinate with my website. I really am happy with how it looks...especially centered :)

I was also so excited yesterday, to open an email from Amy Carroll, the photographer that attended my trunk show. She approached me to see if I would like some photos of my jewelry. WOULD I??? You bet I would!!! I was secretly hoping that she would contact me. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to ask her, but since she asked...YES!!! It really was both flattering and generous. Please check out her work. I have her link on my side bar. As soon as she sends them to me I will share them. I think I have checked my email 2000 times to see if they are there!

I have a special order for bridal earrings that I am working on. They are very simple, elegant pieces. I have been working on filling in my line with some more classic styles for September's Bride. I have to admit, I love working with detail. I try to keep in mind what a bride is going to want to wear, but I put in a little bit of what I love to work on, too. That is what keeps my job exciting! But, I have to remember that some customers are looking for more classic pieces. So, the next batch of pictures will be of my version of classic pieces.

I Am Back To Work!

It really felt great this morning to come back in and have a routine! I was raring to make all of the things that have been going on in my head. I had the pleasure of speaking to Tami this weekend and learned that she has decided to carry my bridal line! :D If you remember, she approached me about giving my jewelry a try. She wanted to see how my line blended with her salon and her customers. Thank you Tami and your customers! Now I have the job of creating pieces for Mother-of-the-Brides and Brides maids. I'll have pictures up in a few days so you can see what I came up with! I will be better about posting pictures. I promise!

Well, I came bounding in with a job at hand! I pulled out all of my beads that fit Tami's requests and started drawing my ideas on paper. I didn't want to forget anything! I had new purchasing orders to make for stones in colors that I didn't carry, and sizes and shapes that I needed for my creations. Yeah, the adrenaline was pumping! And no one was around to stop the creativity! Then, I hit a wall...

I hate when that happens. And it does happen.
I think that my ideas will translate well into beautiful jewelry and when I begin to build my ideas, something doesn't work. It can be the scale of my beads, or the shade of color, or maybe, I don't have exactly what I thought I had in my stock. Whatever it is, nothing I did looked right. I quickly became frustrated which led to a "get me out of here!" feeling.

So here I sit, not knowing what to do. I realize the what is really happening is that you can't always schedule creativity. You can set it up and you can wait for it, but you can't make it happen. When this happens, I usually decide to knit! I get to keep my hands busy while I clear my head. Sometimes, I just put everything away and start with new materials. The ironic part of all this is that, eventually, it all comes surging back just when it is time to make dinner!

Off to make the chicken cutlets!

Trunk Show at September's Bride

I keep promising myself that I am going to be better about writing. The truth is that I love to write, but life keeps getting in the way! The kids were off from school this week and my schedule was all thrown off. Oh, and my mother-in-law moved yesterday and guess who packed and unpacked her entire home?! For one person, she has more than a family of four! I love her though, and would do anything for her! This week coming, I am getting back to a regular schedule and I am going to find the time to keep up.

This past week has actually been a very exciting week for L. Stone Designs! I have been waiting to have success stories to share with you all and I am happy to say that this time I do! As I’ve mentioned, my jewelry is being featured in a trunk show at a beautiful upscale bridal boutique called September’s Bride. If you are anywhere near Holland, Michigan, please stop by for the festivities! I am also very excited to share with you the fact that an amazing photographer, Amy Carroll, who was attending an event at the boutique, was busy photographing models with Tami’s gorgeous gowns on, as well as my jewelry! It is so very exciting to see my jewelry being worn with bridal gowns, as I am not usually able to see the concept go from my head, out my hands, and onto a bride! I usually envision what I am designing and then create it. The customer who purchases my pieces tries on her accessories, but no bridal gown is present! I want to thank everyone involved for providing this experience for me. I have been waiting a long time to have this happen and I appreciate every bit of it! Blogging is a Whole New Monster!

It’s been a little while since I last posted. The truth is that I have been kind of trying to figure out what exactly I expect from my blog and what I want to accomplish. I began this blog so that I could meet other people in the bridal industry and to hopefully connect with brides. I started feeling that I jumped in without a plan and didn’t really have much to say. I feel like there are so many blogs that are amazing and you have to be able to keep up with the best in order to have a following. I had no amazing ideas, and therefore, no following to speak of! (Thanks to the few who check in now and again!)

Blogging is a whole new monster. You have to commit yourself to this project with self assuredness and a plan. You have to be computer savy and well spoken. You have to think outside of the box in order to keep your blogging buddies content. You have to be savy with photography on the web and able to present all of this in an interesting and diverse way. It is almost like a job in itself! And it is for some people! My problem is that I thought it would be like keeping a journal. I take to writing rather well. My mom was an English teacher and required much of me. For that, I am grateful. Too bad no one taught computers…

I have been learning. It has taken a lot of my time, but I have learned the basics and maybe a little more. It is frustrating, though, that as a designer of jewelry, I have an eye for what looks right and what doesn’t. I know what I want, but I can’t always achieve it. I began to get discouraged about my blog when I was putting ALL thas effort into it and not having many readers. So I took a break and waited for some inspiration. I do that sometimes and it usually works. When I least expect it, a thought pops into my mind.

Being new to the bridal business, I find it hard to have all that much to talk about. I don’t have a steady flow of customers to talk about yet. I hope that by this time next year, I’ll have plenty to share, but business is slow at the moment and so I keep trying to think of what to write. I absolutely LOVE inspiration boards. Whoever thought of this was brilliant! But that idea is taken and so I have tried to think of something else a jewelry designer can talk about. I often read boards at wedding sites to see what brides are talking about. It is my way of staying current. I consistently read comments from brides who have no idea about what kind of jewelry they should wear. So there it is! I will create inspiration boards with a jewelry theme! I love the idea. A bride can send me a picture of her gown, the maids’ gowns, or something like her gown and I will create a collage of materials and styles that I think will look fabulous! I like the idea. Now I need brides! For the meantime, I will choose a dress of my liking and begin. I’ll post one tomorrow, though, because, like usual, I have to go figure out how to accomplish this!!!

Green Amethyst!!!

I am in love with green amethyst!!! It is my newest best friend! I had the pleasure of attending The Whole Bead Show in Manhattan this past weekend. I went with the intention of buying colored stones for you brides! I couldn't get this beautiful light shade of green out of my mind and boy did I find me some!

Little By Little

Good news! My son figured out how to post pictures from the net onto my blog! Yay! Little by little. He's off to figure out how to make inspiration boards. I hope he is successful. Thanks Josh! It will be quicker for me to learn from him. ;D I need quick and I need help sometimes, so all is good for now.

Now that I can post other peoples' pictures and not have to rely only on my own, I can start to branch out about what I post about. Whew, that should make my life a little easier and your reading a little more interesting! If there is ever a topic that you want me to look in to, or address, please just send it my way. I am always happy to have a mission. It keeps things more exciting, too!

I am going to have a contest soon. I need more readers before I can though! So spread the word for me. I will be handing over free jewelry to a lucky bride! I am in a funny position though. I have a new blog and so I don't have many readers yet. I want to generate buzz by having a contest, but no one will know because I don't have many readers yet! You know how it is. I am trying. I really am! I am too old for all this. I mean, when I went to college, computer courses were all about how to write programs! Now, the whole word has changed! I really want to know how to do all this "stuff"! I want my blog to look great! In my mind it is all good, but I haven't yet mastered how to make it onto the computer! What I am saying is that I need you all to bear with me while I try to learn (and relearn) how to keep my presence on line fresh. I'm not the most computer friendly person. I try though, and I want to be! So I am always trying to learn. I am currently working on having banners made so that this actually looks like something you might want to see! I am trying to figure out how to wrap words around the pictures and to have pictures in different places on the page. I have to figure out what the heck widgets are and how to use them! What a funny word! And then there are blog rolls and technorati and so on.....!

Yesterday, I spent the day trying to understand how to create inspiration boards. I've been tearing out magazine pictures for years and years. I have boxes of inspiration. But nooooo. Now, it has to be photographed and downloaded onto the computer and touched up on a photo editing program and loaded onto Flickr and transfered over to Photoshop and cropped and resized and played with until it all fits together nicely and transfered back to Flickr and brought over to my blog. Hold on...I need to go make dinner for my family... Wheww!!! Then you have to post this gorgeous piece of work and hope that someone actually stops by to see it!

Seriously, I'm just kidding! I love doing this. I just wish I understood more and had people to ask questions of. It is hard being from a different generation and trying to keep up with all this technology. I am doing my best. So if you happen to stop by my blog and my website, I hope you love browsing through my jewelry, 'cause that is what this is really all about! I want you to enjoy what it is that I really love to do.

Until I can actually make my own inspiration boards (I don't have Photoshop yet!), I will post pictures of inspiration. Hope they inspire you as they do me.

Nicole's necklace

I worked on Nicole's necklace today and I am so excited to share the results. She fell in love with one of my headpieces and we decided to create a necklace out of it. I think that it is one of the richest pieces I have made and I know that she will look absolutely gorgeous wearing it. Nicole has short hair and the necklace will be highlighted wonderfully. I hope that my pictures do the piece justice.

I've been busy working on my next bride's order. Nicole has been a great bride to work with! She is having her maids wear fabulous black gowns and together, we designed a Swarovski jet, hematite, and black diamond theme for her girl's jewelry. I came up with a gorgeous (if I say so myself ;) ) version of my Colleen necklace and my Tricia earrings to coordinate. Nicole's MOH will be wearing a 3 strand version of the choker and her bridesmaids will wear a single strand. I am very pleased with the bold look of the crystals and the combination of colors that we chose to highlight their gowns. The girls will look beautiful in their uniquely styled accessories. That is why I do what I do!

Brides always promise me that they will send me pictures from their weddings. I have yet to receive quite a few! Brides...you promised!!! It really is important to me. The picture makes the experience come full circle. Remember. SEND PICTURES!!! Everyone wants to see how beautiful you looked on your day.

New Ideas

Since being approached by Tami of September's Bride to carry my bridal line,(yay!), I have been thinking about designing a few more necklaces. Tami described the type of pieces she would like to carry and I am excited to create a few more styles that are fresh and exciting. She requested some soft pieces and here is an example of my brainstorming. These pieces are only just being made, so picture them completed. I think that they will look wonderful and romantic on bridesmaids or Mothers. I can picture all different color combinations, too! It is so much fun, this thing that I do!

Back to Work!

I'm so excited to say that I was able to go back to work today! I have been on my back for so long that I forgot what it is like to be vertical! I'm grateful for that. I missed being able to create. I did knit while laying down though! I just have to be doing something!

The one thing that did not go my way today was that a bride cancelled her order. I understand that things happen, but I am still disappointed:( I value every order I get and it is exciting when I pick up a bride's order. Oh well.

I have been exchanging links with other wedding bloggers recently, but Blogger is not allowing me to edit my lists right now. I won't forget you! I'll continue to try. It did this to me once before. I will pursue!!! Has anyone else ever had this problem? Sometimes I wonder if it is just me?!!!

Getting "Back" Into It...

I'm happy to say that almost four weeks later, I am ready to get back into the swing of things! It has been a difficult few weeks for me as I have been down for the count, anxious as can be, and missing my normal routine. I am one of those who clings to a routine for comfort. I miss my creative outlet and am looking forward to getting to my studio so that I can continue with my bridal orders.

Thank you to my brides who have been waiting patiently to hear from me! I did not forget about you for a moment! Luckily, I had just completed one of my brides, Jackie's, order before this ordeal began. Now onto the next few brides who are anxiously awaiting their designs!

I wanted to pass on Jackie's words of thanks as her wedding day look was everything she dreamed of! She promises to send me some pictures as soon as they are available. Congratulations again Jackie! Here's to a wonderful life full of love.

Not Back to Normal

I just wanted to post a quick note. Although I have been MIA for quite awhile, I am looking forward to returning to my blog. Unfortunately, during my dream vacation to Hawaii, I developed extreme back problems and have not been able to concentrate on much. Jackie's Pieces

I am always soooo excited when a bride finds me. It just feels so rewarding. This bride, Jackie, is having a small wedding and she had some very definite ideas of what she wanted. That always makes my job just a bit easier. I took a day and traveled into Manhattan to shop for all of the materials that I needed. I usually have stock, but her order required some customizing. It is a fun day for me, so I didn't mind the trip! Sometimes, it is nice to have a day alone.

I was actually anxious to start this project. It was a lower budget order and, although it is a challenge to make elegant pieces that are suitable for a wedding and still stay within the budget, I find it exciting to meet that challenge. Don't get me wrong! It is also quite exciting to create pieces where money is no object! But in other ways, it is special to make a bride who is on a small budget feel special.

These are the pieces that I created for her. They are delicate and sparkly and she loves them, so my mission is complete! I will post pictures of her wearing her L. Stone Design originals when I receive them!

Marci Bib Necklace

Yay! I have a beautiful piece that I want to share with you! I haven't had much time to work on new pieces so I have had nothing to show, but I took some time to myself to finish my Marci necklace . This style is called a bib necklace. It really is a choker type piece that is luxurious. I envision it with a subtle, classic style gown. Many hours of wirewrapping were involved in creating this piece. I can also see this necklace being made with garnet or another vivid stone. What a pice for a mother-of-the-bride!

I really love this piece and it is quickly going to become one of my favorites! It is so wonderful in your hands and that is all part of the experience to me. Some of my pieces have large quartz stones that feel crisp and cold to the touch. I love how that feels when you put it on! My brides ultimately strongly agree when they try the pieces on! (And they secretly thought that I was strange!) One of the most important elements of using nature's materials is the texture and feel of the stone. If you don't understand, think of how plastic beads feel and then imagine how a chunk of Amethyst feels. Now you know what I mean!

It's Starting

As I receive more inquiries and orders from brides, I am feeling more and more excited by the choices I have made. I have brides that have contacted me through my etsy store, my website, Martha's message boards and my signs on my car. It feels so good that each type of advertising that I have been putting my efforts in to are, little by little, paying off. I am thoroughly enjoying making plans with brides to create pieces that have great meaning to them! And I can tell that they are very happy with what I am designing for them. The process is so gratifying to both of us. It also feels wonderful to me that in every instance, I am able to envision beautiful pieces that suite the people and the dresses of the people who are wearing them.

Is this really finally happening? Yes, I think it is!

Keep Them Coming!

I'm happy to say that a second bride has contacted me to create a headpiece for her! I am so excited for my bridal line to take off! It is just so inspiring to be a part of such a special occasion in someone elses' life. I also enjoy every moment of the process of bridalwear. It is challenging to design custom orders as well as to see the actual piece come alive as I create it! I particularly enjoy the process of shopping for the perfect materials. Finding the perfect mix of sparkle, classic and unique is what I like to do best.

Bridal vendor non-opportunity

I am happy to say that I have gotten my first online order from a totally anonymous bride! Thank you Kristin, for loving what I do! It is a great feeling at a time where I was starting to get a little let down. I have been spending so much time trying to connect with brides. If anyone knows a bride, pass my name along?!!!

One of my sure fire plans was to pay huge amounts of $$ to begin being a vendor at bridal showcases. I was sure that that is where I would start to meet the right people. Believe it or not, they won't even take my $$$! And they haven't even seen my product! That is what happens when you live in such a populated area as I do. What a waste. The venue that I am speaking of in particular, just had a showcase that I attended. There was a jewelry vendor there that showed manufactured jewelry. There were no other jewelry vendors. I was actually counting on this as being my opportunity. When I spoke to them today, they told me that they are not accepting ANY others. There were 3 or 4 flower vendors. They were adamant that this was the in-house vendor and that they wouldn't accept any other competition. So it goes... I will keep calling around.

Back to something good! I have been noticing that bib necklaces are making a comeback. I love the look of them as long as they are dainty and not too long. Just my opinion! I also love the challenge of the wirewrapping. It is my signature. I don't like to just string things. It doesn't challenge my need for fine detail. That is just what I like so much about jewelry making! I try to find that fine line where the design has detail, but is still classic. Fun, fun, fun! Here is a piece in the making. I can just picture a long, lean neck and a gown!
